Dal is a south indian popular dish which is common in many homes,in that Tomato dal and palak dal are very famous.With inspiration of both these created this cooked dal. Chayote is one of the common vegetable which we get in foz.Using this versatile vegetable created this dal which is perfect for rice and roti..
I have used chana dal which is healthy and protein packed.But you can replace with toor dal which works out too.For rich taste prepare tadka with ghee instead of oil.This dal tastes best with hot white steaming rice and chapathi with pickle and curd.

WHAT YOU NEED
Chana dal-1 cup
chayote-1 big
onion -1 medium size 
tomato-1 medium size
red chili powder-2 tea spoons
salt-to taste
turmeric powder-1/2 tea spoon
oil -1 tea spoon+ 2 table spoons for tadka
tamarind juice-1/8 cup
Tadka ingredients
oil -2 table spoons
mustard seeds-1 tea spoon
cumin seeds -1 tea spoon
chana dal-1 tea spoon
urad dal-1 tea spoon
hing/asafoetida-1/4 tea spoon
red chili-2
curry leaves-few
HOW TO COOK
Peel skin and chop chayote,onion and tomato.Wash and soak dal in one cup of water for 20 minutes..Now heat a pressure cooker add soaked dal with water,add chopped vegetables. Add red chili powder,1/4 tea spoon of salt,turmeric powder,oil and pressure cook for 3 whistles or 15 minutes high flame.Turn off after pressure cooking and rest it for some time.Now add fresh tamarind juice and mix well.Then,in a vessel heat oil,add tadka ingredients,saute for few seconds and add in cooked dal.Serve hot with rice or roti.
