Vada is the south Indian popular deep fried food which serves for breakfast. Using white urad dal makes this vada which I have already posted in my blog. At the same time, I have whole urad dal at home which I brought from India so, thought to try with black urad dal. In the evening time, I tried this vada so it was almost night while taking the pictures.
For vadas, the batter should be very thick, so grind dal without any water. But here the batter was too loose so I added some finely chopped cabbage to make the batter thick. Adding cabbage is optional, it tastes good in both ways. Try next time this vada with split urad dal, I am sure you'll like the result.

whole urad dal -2 cups
cabbage finely chopped -2 cups
 salt to taste 
finely chopped green chilli 5-6 
cumin seeds- 1 teaspoon
ginger garlic paste- 1 teaspoon
oil for deep frying
Wash and soak whole urad dal for 4 hours then without water grind into a fine paste.
The batter should be thick to make vada. 
Chop cabbage finely, add salt to taste and mix well. After 10 minutes squeeze out the water.
Now add this cabbage to the dal mixture, also add finely chopped green chilli, cumin seeds, ginger garlic paste and mix well everything. 
Heat a Kadai with oil for deep frying, when the oil is hot, carefully drop the lemon-sized batter and fry in medium flame till the vada turns light brown in colour.
Take the fried vadas in a kitchen paper towel and serve hot with peanut chutney or coconut chutney.
